Harvard Baseball’s Martin Dominates All-Star Skills Competition

Monday, July 21, 2014

Rising Harvard senior Mike Martin stole the show at the New England Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Skills Challenge, winning both the throwing accuracy contest and the 60-yard dash event.

Martin (second from left in the photo) flashed a powerful and accurate throwing arm and blazed a 6.4 second 60-yard dash. Both of those traits make him one of the top outfielders in the NECBL and the Ivy League.

Martin had 4 outfield assists and didn't make a single error last season as a junior.  His 60-yard dash time only reinforced that he has incredible speed- speed that led him to steal 17 bases last spring for the Crimson (in 17 attempts).

It's not all about the arm and the legs for Martin.  He batted .304 last season as a junior (2nd on the Crimson) and led or tied for the team lead in plate appearances, hits, triples, home runs, and slugging percentage.

The Skills Competition preceded the 21st NECBL All-Star Game Sunday.  The North beat the South (Martin's team) 4-3, and Martin finished 0 for 2 from the plate.

Martin is batting .339 this summer for the Plymouth Pilgrims, leading them to the best record in the NECBL thus far at 24-7.
