Harvard University Housing residents moving in to Soldiers Field Park’s Building Four this year will be met with light, efficient, and healthier living spaces thanks to a recent renovation, which achieved LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

“We are very excited to have successfully completed Phase 1 of this multi-year effort to refresh and improve both the physical space and overall living experience at Soldiers Field Park for our residents,” said Justin Stratman, Managing Director of Harvard University Housing.

One of the project goals was to deliver a healthier interior for residents. The project team worked with the manufacturer to ensure the selected flooring material was produced without any added antimicrobials, a class of chemicals linked to developmental, hormonal, and reproductive problems. Additionally, the team’s wellness efforts focused on controlling noise pollution and enhancing access to natural light.

“Using the lessons learned from this initial, 47-unit, phase, we will make further improvements and informed choices regarding the design, layout, and materials to enrich occupant health and comfort, and align with the University’s commitments to green building and sustainability. We strive to effectively balance project costs, tenant expectations and University goals for the built environment,” said Stratman.

For example, all furniture and furnishings at Soldiers Field Park will be free of harmful chemical flame retardants, in accordance with Harvard’s flame retardant-free purchasing pledge.

Energy conservation measures implemented in the renovation include high-performing, healthier LEDs, high efficiency washer and dryers, and natural ventilation strategies.
