Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea debuted in the September 1, 1952 issue of Life magazine. Five million copies of this issue were sold in the first two days it appeared on newsstands.
While it won the 1953 Pulitzer Prize, scholars today don’t consider it near the equal to Hemingway’s work in the 1920s and ‘30s, Nevertheless, it remains a staple in U.S. high school curricula.
