HGSE Announces Fall 2014 Askwith Forums

The Harvard Graduate School of Education is pleased to announce its fall 2014 Askwith Forums, a series of public lectures dedicated to discussing challenges facing education, sharing new knowledge, and generating spirited conversation. Highlights this fall include a conversation with Claude Steele, social psychologist, executive vice chancellor and provost for University of California, and author of Whistling Vivaldi, about how stereotypes can impact education; a discussion about the use of race in college admissions with Economic Policy Institute Research Associate Richard Rothstein and Georgetown Law Professor Sheryll Cashin; and a forum about education leadership.

The complete fall schedule of events follows:

October 8: Is U.S. Public School Funding Fair? with Education Law Center Executive Director David Sciarra, Rutgers University Graduate School of Education Professor Bruce Baker, HGSE Professor Andres Alonso, and Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund Southwest Regional Counsel David Hinojosa. Moderated by Susan Eaton, Ed.D.’99, research director for the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice, Harvard Law School. 5:30 – 7 p.m. Presented in conjunction with the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice, Harvard Law School.

October 27: Higher Education, the Cost Disease, and Systemic Reform with Professor Mark Yudof, University of California at Berkeley School of Law and president emeritus. Introduced by Dean James Ryan. 5:30 – 7 p.m.

October 30: The End of Race-Based College Admissions with Economic Policy Institute Research Associate Richard Rothstein and Georgetown Law Professor Sheryll Cashin. 5:30 – 7 p.m.

November 5: Stereotype Threat: How it Affects Us and What We Can Do About It with Claude Steele, executive vice chancellor and provost for University of California at Berkeley, and author of Whistling Vivaldi: And Other Clues to How Stereotypes Affect Us and What We Can Do. Discussion by Lecturer Pamela Mason, M.A.T.’70, Ed.D.’75. Introduced by Dean James Ryan. 5:30 – 7 p.m. Forum in conjunction with the Dean’s Advisory Council on Equity and Diversity.

November 20: Education Leadership. 5 – 6:30 p.m.

All forums are held in Askwith Hall at the Longfellow building on Appian Way in Cambridge, Mass. Forums are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted on the calendar description.
