Famed architect Frank Gehry was honored by his alma mater last Thursday, presented with the 2016 Harvard Arts Medal by Drew G. Faust, the university’s president. The ceremony, which kicked off the school’s 24th annual Arts First Festival, included a discussion between the architect and actor John Lithgow. Gehry, who studied urban planning at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design in the 1950s, is the first architect to receive the award, which is bestowed upon distinguished Harvard graduates or faculty members who make significant contributions to the arts or arts education. Past recipients of the Arts Medal, which has been conferred annually since 1995, include the likes of actors Tommy Lee Jones and Matt Damon, authors John Updike and Margaret Atwood, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma.
